On September 23, 1976, Democratic candidate Jimmy Carter and Republican incumbent, President Gerald Ford agreed to 3 debates (one on domestic issues, one on foreign policy, and one on any topic) on television before studio audiences. A single vice presidential debate was also held that year between Democratic Senator Walter Mondale and Republican Senator Bob Dole. James Earl “Jimmy” Carter, Jr. (born October 1, 2024) served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981 and was the recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, the only US President to have received the Prize after leaving office. Before he became President, Carter served two terms as a Georgia State Senator and one as Governor of Georgia, from 1971 to 1975, and was a peanut farmer and naval officer. As president, Carter created two new cabinet-level departments: the Department of Energy and the Department of Education. Jimmy Carter beat Ted Kennedy because Americans thought Kennedy was too liberal and Carter was more to the Independent but democratic.

  • philberz

    I think Carter was/is a better public speaker than given credit for. Better than HW Bush, Cheney, and some others

  • jayNicks10

    Ford lost for mainly one reason. Pardoning Nixon. Carter lost for mainly one reason as well, the Iranian hostage crisis. In which he was successful in getting the Iranians to release them but not till after he had lost re-election. Reagan, I don’t know how he got re-elected. he wasn’t any more successful than Carter or Ford were in creating jobs. Plus, the invasion of Lebenon and Granada that was a failure. If it wasn’t for Reagan, there probably would not have been President George W Bush.

  • jayNicks10

    @whothehellgivesadamn DUDE. In 4 years, Carter created 10 Million jobs. Reagan only created 5 million in his first 4 years. Gerald Ford meanwhile created 5 million in just 3 years.

    @jayNicks10 WHAT KIND OF RATING SYSTEM DO YOU USE DUMBFUCK….I’M SURE IT COMES OUT OF YOUR ASS

  • jayNicks10

    this election featured 2 of the most underrated Presidents ever. And then ironically in 1981, one of the most overrated Presidents took office. Carter & Ford were both > Reagan.

    That’s what this country needs, another fascist who curtails dissent at his town hall meetings. Go take a hike.

    Had Ford been elected, we would’ve had a surplus by 1978, Unemployment would have been at the lowest since the 1950′s by 1979 and the interest rates would have been lower than they are currently by 1980.

    Ford was bringing this nation back to be better than it was under Eisenhower and sadly the Carter Administration reversed its course.

  • ABCED2277

    @TexasMan77 Nixon and LBJ didn’t really like debating.

  • KyleClarkUSA

    @RegisteredDelboy If you refer back to my comment I was more addressing Carters horrible speaking skills than anything you idiot.

  • RegisteredDelboy

    @KyleClarkUSA
    This was the 1976 debate, therefore, talking about 1980 nomination contest is wholly irrelevant. Perhaps if you’d written the comment on a Reagan-Carter debate video it would have been pertinent…
    “Turn-coat Tommy bastard” - lol.

  • KyleClarkUSA

    @RegisteredDelboy First off don’t talk down to me you turn-coat Tommy bastard and second HE DID RUN AGAINST KENNEDY IN 1980 for the democratic nomination so before you smirk at me know your damn History.

  • RegisteredDelboy

    @KyleClarkUSA
    I’m British and even I know that. Furthermore, learn to spell!

  • RegisteredDelboy

    @KyleClarkUSA
    Chappaquiddick incident, duhhh. Compounded by the prevaling virulence of the post-Watergate Washington scene…
    People thought a peanut farming provincial would bring honesty, and, indeed, that proved to be his only quality.
    + Kennedy wasn’t even a candidate for the Democratic nomination in 1976 you God-damned moron!

  • Fashionificationful

    President Carter got the peace prize too. You know Obama was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize twelve days after taking office. Upon acceptance of winning it, Obama was praised by the committee, “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy”. . They also gave the peace prize to Yasser Arafat, the leader of the PLO, the best known terrorist organization on the globe. This is like giving it to David Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the KKK.

  • KyleClarkUSA

    @RegisteredDelboy Senator Kennedy as in Ted Kennedy. Duhhh

  • RegisteredDelboy

    @KyleClarkUSA
    Kennedy?

  • KyleClarkUSA

    How did Carter beet Kennedy? Horrible speaker not a bad person, but horrible speaker

  • jpatrickbad

    Sounds like Obama, a lot of words but saying nothing. Here he is asking for increase taxes, when they talk about shifting taxes and more programs.

  • Shelver92

    I think, in this instance, the American people voted the wrong way in 1976. Although I respect Jimmy Carter for what he has done outside of the White House, he was just the wrong man during the turbulent times that were the late 70′s.

  • TheGeekyNinjaStudios

    Actually Ford almost won. He just made some major gaffes which narrowly lost him Ohio.

  • TexasMan77

    The Watergate scandal and it’s aftermath paved the way for Jimmy Carter’s win.

    @SavageArmsMan

  • WestVirginiaRebel

    @TexasMan77 Johnson and Nixon wouldn’t share a platform with their opponents.

  • SavageArmsMan

    How did Jerry not win this election? The guy had a simple, clear cut solution to the problems we faced and yet we chose to go down a path that hurt our country’s future.

  • Gillies

    Had ford been elected, we would still have had an Iranian hostage situation and we would have been thrown out of Iran - and Ford would have been thrown out of office - in 1980. Much of Carter’s downfall was his stupid policy of chickening out of debates by “Staying in the white house to focus on the Iran hostage situation”. After 180 days of doing it, with no results, he had signed his own re-election waiver.

    • Taylor Anderson

      Carter’s problem was that he was too smart. He had the mental capacity to be planning and building for ten-fifteen years down the line. Unfortunately he failed to recognize that he might only have 4 years. Oops.
