On September 23, 1976, Democratic candidate Jimmy Carter and Republican incumbent, President Gerald Ford agreed to 3 debates (one on domestic issues, one on foreign policy, and one on any topic) on television before studio audiences. A single vice presidential debate was also held that year between Democratic Senator Walter Mondale and Republican Senator Bob Dole. James Earl “Jimmy” Carter, Jr. (born October 1, 2024) served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981 and was the recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, the only US President to have received the Prize after leaving office. Before he became President, Carter served two terms as a Georgia State Senator and one as Governor of Georgia, from 1971 to 1975, and was a peanut farmer and naval officer. As president, Carter created two new cabinet-level departments: the Department of Energy and the Department of Education. He established a national energy policy that included conservation, price control, and new technology. In foreign affairs, Carter pursued the Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal Treaties, the second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT II), and returned the Panama Canal Zone to Panama.     Jimmy Carter beat Ted Kennedy because Americans thought Kennedy was too liberal and Carter was more to the Independent but democratic.

    Ford lost for mainly one reason. Pardoning Nixon. Carter lost for mainly one reason as well, the Iranian hostage crisis. In which he was successful in getting the Iranians to release them but not till after he had lost re-election. Reagan, I don’t know how he got re-elected. he wasn’t any more successful than Carter or Ford were in creating jobs. Plus, the invasion of Lebenon and Granada that was a failure. If it wasn’t for Reagan, there probably would not have been President George W Bush.

    this election featured 2 of the most underrated Presidents ever. And then ironically in 1981, one of the most overrated Presidents took office. Carter & Ford were both > Reagan.

    Had Ford been elected, we would’ve had a surplus by 1978, Unemployment would have been at the lowest since the 1950′s by 1979 and the interest rates would have been lower than they are currently by 1980.

    Ford was bringing this nation back to be better than it was under Eisenhower and sadly the Carter Administration reversed its course.

    President Carter got the peace prize too. You know Obama was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize twelve days after taking office. Upon acceptance of winning it, Obama was praised by the committee, “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy”. . They also gave the peace prize to Yasser Arafat, the leader of the PLO, the best known terrorist organization on the globe. This is like giving it to David Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the KKK.

    I think, in this instance, the American people voted the wrong way in 1976. Although I respect Jimmy Carter for what he has done outside of the White House, he was just the wrong man during the turbulent times that were the late 70′s.

    How did Jerry not win this election? The guy had a simple, clear cut solution to the problems we faced and yet we chose to go down a path that hurt our country’s future.

    Had ford been elected, we would still have had an Iranian hostage situation and we would have been thrown out of Iran - and Ford would have been thrown out of office - in 1980. Much of Carter’s downfall was his stupid policy of chickening out of debates by “Staying in the white house to focus on the Iran hostage situation”. After 180 days of doing it, with no results, he had signed his own re-election waiver.

      Carter’s problem was that he was too smart. He had the mental capacity to be planning and building for ten-fifteen years down the line. Unfortunately he failed to recognize that he might only have 4 years. Oops.
