The Labor Department reported Thursday that the unemployment claims increased 9000 to a seasonally adjusted 408000. The gain comes in after last week’s claims slipped below the 400000 level. The Department also reported that the consumer price index increased 0.5% in July, which is the biggest gain since March. The index tracks the rate of inflation at the retail level. Economists had expected a 0.4% increase. Core prices, excluding the volatile food and energy cost inputs, rose 0.2% in the month.
