As part of my transition from TV anchor-workaholic-city/party girl to stay-at-home mom of twins, I moved to the suburbs. Maybe I should try to get on Real Housewives of New Jersey?? The show thrives on drama, right? Well, do interior decorating and home renovations count as drama? I always thought it would be fun to renovate and decorate a house, but boy, was I wrong! Aside from the frustration of things going wrong (crappy paint job, furniture movers scratching up the floor, furniture that I end up hating and selling for a loss), this is crazy expensive!!!
Cody asked me to write about what’s stressing me out most about my finances right now. And Cody, it’s all the money that’s going to furnish this big house in the suburbs and dealing with contractors. What’s with formal living rooms and dining rooms in these suburban homes anyway??? Probably won’t ever use them, aside from Christmas. And now I have to buy China too??? I thought about turning the formal living room into an office or a playroom, but it would look dumb having that be the first room you see when you walk into the house. So I find some pictures of rooms that I like. Who knew a painter cost so much? And to put up wallpaper? Forget about it!! How do you do this for less money? I’m stressing about this. I never knew dining room chairs cost so much!
As I’m writing this, I realize my “problems” are superficial, compared to many in this economy who can’t find a job. But this is my life right now. I need to make this place my home. But I’m also cognizant of the money that I sometimes feel I’m wasting. I go back and forth from…”I want to have a beautiful home and quality furniture. I’ve worked hard to get here”…to…”This is wasting money that should be in a savings account.” How much money do they make on the Real Housewives of New Jersey anyway??? I’ve got some dining room chairs to buy!
